Pritzker Prize winner (1995), esteemed Architect, Tadao Ando. Commonly known for his ability to combine architecture with nature, natural light, his modernist approach to interpreting form and use of raw concrete.

We can all aspire to have a successful career, as long as Ando's 50 yr stretch...but not many of us can say we are largely self-taught! He has created a wealth of successful and memorable projects across the world.

Characteristically he creates works with smooth, polished concrete creating walls which are beautifully bare and minimalist. The idea being, that we focus on the form of the building and how the elements come into play with it. Ando is a believer of striking an emotional reaction with the way we create space and thus how it is used as a backdrop for human interaction and experience.

His craft is a combination of Japanese architecture with modernism to elevate our encounters with architecture. There is a beauty in his work and the way he interprets the relationship between solid and void.

The contrast of the raw concrete against the earthy green landscape, switching between interior
and exterior space, all adds to the dramatising of the architectural experience

I recently came across Ando's sketches, some of which I believe were being exhibited at the Pompidou Centre recently. The exhibition explored the Architect's design principles. Almost 50 projects were showcased, across 180 drawings, 70 original models and slideshows.

I have selected a variety of projects to highlight in this post, through images I have found to be particularly compelling. I hope you have enjoyed looking through them, hopefully I have inspired you to find your favourite architectural wonder of one of our generation's greats!
